The ever-changing world of media can be hard to navigate, especially when facing a global pandemic such as the COVID-19. We know that now more than ever, brands can struggle to spread their message and engage with their audience in a tasteful way. We have had a lot of our clients come to us with great questions, which we believe some of you might be asking as well. Below you can find some answers that we hope will help you, your brand or someone you know.
Are media outlets still working?
The short and simple answer is yes. We took some time to assess the situation and here is what we found when talking with our close media contacts.
Most of the scheduled content has shifted dramatically and is either on hold or completely scratched off. The big majority is focusing on COVID-19 related news. That being said, we have also heard that people are looking for feel-good stories that can resonate with the public and bring a positive spin on the current situation.
Can we pitch or reach out to media outlets at this time?
It all depends on your industry and whether or not your message is relevant. The best advice we can give is BE MINDFUL and make sure to avoid being TONE DEAF. Focus on how you, your brand or your message can help people or educate them. If you have something to offer that could be of value, you can definitely share it with your network.
If you do decide to pitch and reach out to your network with relevant news, make sure to keep in mind that these are people who are most likely working from home alongside their family members. Give people time to respond, and follow up on your pitch after you have given them some time to process the information you sent.
Here is an example of how to pitch during this time:
Explain why their audience needs to hear your message DURING THIS TIME.
Give brief details.
What are you offering
How do their readers benefit from this
Why is it relevant to their demographic and any ties to the current situation
No need to give all of the information, provide them with the relevant basics and if they are interested they will ask for more.
How can we connect with the public during this time?
Social distancing doesn’t mean you should stop connecting with others. It’s quite the opposite. This is the time to really connect with your audience, check in on them, ask questions, provide valuable information and be genuine. There is this thing called social media, a powerful tool right at your fingerprints, use it! Again, remember to be tasteful and think of how your content can be helpful for those looking at it.
If you are a nonprofit, we know this time is especially difficult for you, given that fundraising is now all being done through online channels. This is the time to tap into your online connections and ask for help.
